- The Dunlop Racing developed the R5 in 1958.
- The development of the Racing R5 allowed up to 12lbs in weight reduction.

The next breakthrough came in 1958 when Dunlop introduced the use of nylon fabric with the R5, reducing weights by 12 lbs. per tyre. It was in this pattern that Dunlop introduced the first synthetic tread compound, now known as 'green spot' by its colour coded identification
