Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 Tires
There were several changes with the introduction of the 330 GT 2+2, it would be interesting to know if some of these changes were partially driven by the developments that were made in tire production. With the introduction of the new CN72, Pirelli were now able to develop a High-Speed tire with a 205 section. As well as the 330 GT 2+2, the best Sports cars in the world fitted Pirelli’s 205VR15 Cinturato CN72; Maserati 5000GT, ISO Grifo, DB6, Lamborghini Muira and Ferrari’s 500 Superfast to name but a few. (Important to note that this is not a 205/70VR15)
It was just a brief 4 year period, where the 205VR15 Pirelli Cinturato CN72 was the lead tire for powerful sports cars, because in 1968 70% profile tires were invented. The Daytona was one of the first cars to fit low profile tires, other Ferrari models moved over to 70 profile throughout the 1970s. In 2010 Longstone asked Pirelli if they would reintroduce the 205VR15 CN72 tire again, because it is such an important tire. There was nothing else that could substitute it that was right, so for some considerable time 1964-68 cars were fitting more modern 215/70VR15 tires which are a little wider and over an inch smaller in diameter. Not the end of the world, but not right.
Alternative tires for a Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 would be 205VR15 Avon, ,215/70VR15 Avon CR6ZZ (for the track), 215/70VR15 Pirelli Cinturato CN12 or Michelin 215/70VR15 XWX. However all things considered we would recommend sticking with the Pirelli 205VR15 CN72 as it has the correct diameter, and a 215/70VR15 tire is a little smaller in diameter.
Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 wheel
The 330 GT 2+2 moved up to a 7” rim RW3812 wheels, to accommodate the new larger tires. The wider wheels giving more grip, but also being taller increasing their ability to absorb the shocks and vibration from the road and making a more luxurious ride.
It is worth mentioning, these cut off periods with different wheels on cars might not tie up exactly with the change of models, because if Ferrari had a set of RW3960 when they started producing the 330 America, that is what they would have fitted. In the same way the first 330 GT 2+2 cars may well have RW3801 on it.
There was also the option of specifying different wheels on these cars, so you may have special build wheels. If your car doesn’t not have these designated wheels fitted, It does not mean, for definite that they are wrong. The best way to find this out is contact your Borrani dealer and through looking at Ferrari’s original build sheet for your car they will be able to give you some clarification.
