When Michelin introduced the first asymmetric radial tyre in 1965 with the XAS it took the world by storm. At the time Michelin were major share holders in Citroen, and their flagship car the DS wandered somewhat on the new motorways Autobahns and dual carriageways that were springing up everywhere. The intention of the XAS was to improve it's directional satability. Michelin realised that like the human foot the inside edge of a tyre does a different job to the outside edge and designed their XAS accordingly.
Being made in full profile, and being a genuine period tyre the XAS has the lovely rounded shoulders that cars of this period need to make their handling light and progressive.
