155R13 Tyres

The tyre size 155R13 is such an important tyre size for classic cars of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Many 1960s classic cars like the Fiat 1300 and early MK1 Ford Cortina, including the Lotus Cortina, Sunbeam Alpine, Triumph Vitesse, and Vauxhall Victor, left the factory fitted with crossply tyres of the size 560 - 13, which is a crossply tyre that was to be superseded by the radial size 155R13. As car production moved through the 1970s, these cars and many more started to fit 155R13 radial tyres as standard equipment as the crossply tyre technology became obsolete.

It's worth mentioning that as these car models progressed into the 1970s and 1980s, a significant number of them switched to utilizing low-profile tyres. The low-profile alternative to a 155R13 would be the 175/70 WR 13 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN36. As these cars developed and moved onto low-profile tyres there were other changes within the chassis geometry, they would have more adverse camber, stiffer springs with less travel in the suspension, and wider rims, but the cars would be subtly tuned to suit the tyre size. So if you do change the tyre size you will be subtly affecting its handling.

155R13 CINTURATO

Some fantastic little sports cars fitted 155R13 tyres as standard, such as the Fiat 124, Triumph Spitfire 1500, and Triumph GT6, as well as their Herald, Vitesse, Triumph Toledo, and Triumph Dolomite. The Lotus Elan moved onto 155R13, as did the Europa. On a sporting car of this period, the Cinturato was the tyre of choice. It was a well-known fact that if you could afford to fit a Pirelli Cinturato, you would be rewarded with fantastic handling, which is why these Cinturatos were being fitted by the world's best sports car manufacturers. The Pirelli Cinturato provided the extra grip, longevity, and directional stability that people were becoming accustomed to with a radial tyre, but for a sports car, the Cinturato stood out as the tyre of choice. We have no doubt in suggesting that for a classic sports car owner looking for a car that fits either a 155R13 or 5.60-13 crossply, the 155R13 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67 will be second to none.

So many of the Ford range of cars at this period fitted 155R13 from the Ford Escort through Capri and into the Cortina, and at this time Ford was developing a healthy relationship with Pirelli as the leading radial tyre manufacturer.
