Avon TurboSpeed Tires

The Avon Turbospeed is a very high-quality crossply. The Turbospeed is designed for a select range of cars from the end of the 50s and 60s and is capable of speeds up to 150mph (240 km/h), which is why, in period, some of these tires had a V speed rating. However, the crossply Avon TurboSpeed tires manufactured today hold the H speed rating. The original appearance combines with the highest quality construction for authenticity on classic high-speed vehicles. We would still suggest that of the 15" and 16" crossply tires available for performance cars today, the Avon TurboSpeed is among the best.

In the late 1950s, when the Avon TurboSpeed crossply tires were being used by the likes of Rolls Royce and Aston Martin, there were not the number of dual carriageways and motorways that there are today. The effect of these higher cruising speeds means that people wanted to use a radial alternative tire for improved directional stability. In which case we would recommend fitting a period radial such as the Michelin X, which came out in the 50s or as Aston Martin did, fit the PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ which in the cases of the sizes that Avon make their Turbospeed; PIRELLI still make the V-rated radial tires that were fitted by Aston Martin, Jaguar, Ferrari, MG, Lancia, etc. in the 50s and 60s. Some considerable time later, Avon developed the Avon Turbosteel radial tire, which took over from the crossply Avon Turbospeed, right at the end of the 1960s.

  • Original equipment on classic Rolls Royce.
  • Avon Turbospeed Classic tires are sadly no longer made in the UK.
  • Avon Turbospeed was the crossply predecessor to the radial Avon TurboSteel.
